Antminer control boards and hash boards
Which platform your miner control board runs on, how many chips sit on one hash board and which board revisions exist. A table covering 47 models, put together from our own machines and from the ones that came through the workshop.
01What a control board is
A miner holds two different kinds of electronics. The hash boards do the counting, the control board runs them: it keeps the network up, serves the web panel, watches temperature and hands out work. It is a small single board computer built around one of four processors.
| Platform | Full name | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|
| aml | Amlogic | Fitted to the newer models. Fast boot, firmware over SD card or straight into memory. |
| xil | Xilinx | The long running workhorse of the S19 series, also found in X21 hydro machines. |
| cv | CVitek | Came in to replace boards that were in short supply, often shipped as an alternative on the same model. |
| bb | BeagleBone | The earliest S19 series boards. Rarely seen now. |
Knowing the platform matters for three reasons. Buying firmware: an Amlogic file will not load on Xilinx. Repair: a replacement board is picked by platform, not by miner name. Buying a used miner: the same model can carry any of the boards listed in the table.
02How to find out your platform
- Look at the board itself. The marking is printed on the PCB and the processor is visible right there.
- Open the miner web panel and find the system version section. The firmware line usually names the platform.
- Check against the table below. If the model has one platform, that settles it. If it has several, you will have to look with your own eyes.
03Hash board revisions
A number such as BHB68603 is the hash board revision. Bitmain builds the same miner model with different boards: the layout changes, the power scheme changes, sometimes the chip placement too. From the outside the machines look identical.
For a buyer this matters in one case: ordering spare parts. A replacement board is matched by revision, not by miner model. The revision is printed on the board itself, usually near the edge.
The table below lists the revisions we have come across. The list is open ended: Bitmain keeps adding new ones.
04How many chips a miner has
The table gives the chip count per hash board, not per miner. To get the total, multiply by the number of boards. Air cooled Antminers usually have three.
| Model | Chips per board | Boards | Total chips |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antminer S21 | 108 | 3 | 324 |
| Antminer L9 | 110 | 3 | 330 |
| Antminer L7 | 120 | 3 | 360 |
The domain column is the number of power groups on a board. Chips inside a domain are powered in series, so when one domain fails the whole group drops out. That is why a fault looks the way it does: the hashrate does not lose a single chip, it loses a noticeable share.
05Model table
Columns: cooling, control board platform, chips per hash board, power domains per board, known board revisions.

06Frequently asked questions
The connectors do not always line up, and the firmware is definitely a different one. In practice a board is replaced with the same platform, otherwise you have to work out both the file and the settings again.
Bitmain built batches on different processors because of component shortages. Model, year and even serial number do not settle it, you have to look at the board.
The first part encodes board type and family. Boards with H are usually hydro, with I immersion, with A the air cooled newer series. Bitmain does not publish the full breakdown.
Multiply the figure from the table by the number of hash boards. Air cooled models have three, hydro and immersion can differ: check the status section of the web panel, it shows the number of chains.
These are our own observations from machines we have serviced. Bitmain does not publish this information, so the list keeps growing. If your revision is missing, write to us.
