Keeping the air clean costs less than cleaning the ASIC

A dust filter goes on the room's air intake or on the miner itself. It changes your schedule: you clean a filter once a week instead of taking the ASIC apart.

Why a miner needs a filter

An ASIC pumps a huge volume of air through itself, and all the dust in that air settles in the heatsinks. The chain that follows is familiar: temperature climbs, the fans howl, throttling begins. A filter cuts it off at the start.

The right place for the filter is the room's intake, not the face of the miner. Mesh pressed against the fans chokes the flow, and the ASIC now heats up from the filter itself rather than from dust. An intake wall with coarse class G4 filters catches large dust and fluff and barely resists the air.

A filter is a consumable with a schedule. A clogged filter is worse than none: the flow drops, intake temperature creeps up, and the ASIC looks guilty even though the mesh is the problem. Check the filter more often than the inside of the miner.

There is no total protection, fine dust gets through anyway. A filter does not cancel cleaning the ASIC, it stretches the interval between cleanings from months to a year depending on the location.

How to set it up right

Size the filter area generously against the flow: more mesh means less resistance and a longer time before it clogs.

Put a schedule on the filter itself: a look once a week, replacement or a wash based on condition, not the calendar.

Watch the intake temperature of the miners. If it rose in the same weather, the filter gets checked first.

Fluff and poplar season are a separate mode: in those weeks the filter clogs in days, not months.

Example from practice

A garage with six miners, intake through a frame with coarse filters. Inspection on Sundays, a wash once a month, more often in summer because of fluff. The miners inside have not been opened for cleaning in over a year: the heatsinks look clear against the light, temperatures are the same as after purchase.

Can you stretch mesh right over the ASIC

You can, if you understand the price: any mesh on the intake side cuts the flow and raises chip temperatures. A coarse frame at a distance is tolerable, dense fabric pressed flat is harmful.

What filter class do you need

Coarse filtration, G4 is enough. Fine filters hold more dust but choke the flow and need a fan with pressure to spare, which in mining means wasted watts.

Filter or regular cleaning

The filter is what makes cleaning rare. Without it dust settles in the heatsinks, and taking an ASIC apart is an hour of work and a risk to the thermal paste.
