Firmware Downgrade
A downgrade is rolling firmware back to an earlier version. Manufacturers dislike it and put up barriers, yet you need it more often than you would think.
Why roll back, and what stands in the way
The main reason to roll back is custom firmware: much of it installs on top of a specific stock version. A miner fresh from the factory or after an update arrives on something too new, and the road to tuning starts with a step back.
The second reason is more mundane: a new stock version sometimes behaves worse than the old one on your particular hardware. Different fan thresholds, a different autotune, a monitoring incompatibility. A combination that works is worth more than a fresh version number.
What stands in the way is anti-rollback: the manufacturer marks the board with a minimum version flag, and the web interface refuses any firmware older than that mark. Bitmain does exactly this on some models and batches, which is why updating just in case is a bad habit.
The workaround usually goes through an SD card: booting from an image rewrites the board past the web interface. It does not work on every board and batch combination, and the honest answer here is this: first you look for reports on your exact model and production date, then you insert the card.

How to roll back without casualties
Check the exact model, control board revision, and production date: rollback reports are searched by those three, not by the miner's name.
Download the target stock version from the manufacturer's site or a verified source, not from a chat.
Go through the SD image if the web interface refuses: it is the standard recovery path, and it gets past anti-rollback where a workaround exists at all.
Write down the version combination that worked: which stock, which custom, on which board. The next miner from the same batch will take ten minutes.
An example from the workshop
A miner arrives after an auto-update and the custom firmware will not install: the base is too new. The web interface blocks the rollback. An old stock image goes in through the SD card, the board accepts it, and the custom firmware with autotuning lands right after. The income difference over a month pays for that hour of fiddling many times over.

Questions and answers
Is it legal and safe for the miner
The ASIC is yours, firmware goes on at your own risk. Third-party software voids the manufacturer's warranty, but a rollback by itself does not hurt the hardware.
Why do manufacturers block rollbacks
Officially, for security and to close vulnerabilities. In practice anti-rollback also gets in the way of custom firmware and of buying older versions cheap.
Can any miner be rolled back
No. Some boards and batches enforce the block hard, and the SD path does not help. That is why you look for confirmed reports on your exact batch first.
