Overclocking means running the chips above factory frequency. You get more terahash, more watts too, and cooling sends you the bill for that trade.

What ASIC overclocking is

The factory sets the frequency with headroom so every ASIC in the batch meets the spec sheet. Your specific miner usually has some of that headroom left, and custom firmware lets you claim it: ten or twenty percent more hashrate from the same hardware.

You pay for it twice. Power grows faster than hashrate, because stable operation at a higher frequency also needs more voltage, and voltage enters the power equation squared. J/TH under overclock is almost always worse than stock.

The second bill is heat. An air-cooled miner already runs near its limit in summer at stock settings. Overclocking adds hundreds of watts, and without cooling headroom it all ends in throttling: the number in the config is big, the actual hashrate sits below stock. Hydro and immersion tanks hold an overclock far more confidently than air.

A sensible overclock is done with autotuning, not one number for the whole ASIC: the firmware finds the limit of each chip. And it makes sense on cheap electricity, when a terahash is worth more than a watt. On an expensive rate undervolting wins, it is the same tool turned the other way.

How to overclock without losses

Cooling first, frequency second. Clean heatsinks, fresh thermal paste, cold intake air: without that, an overclock eats itself.

Raise it in steps and hold each one for a day. Hardware errors and hashboard restarts are the signal to step back.

Watch the money, not the terahash: added income minus the added power bill. On some rates overclocking runs at a loss.

Remember the power supply: the stock one has little headroom, and the overclock hits it before it hits the chips.

An example in numbers

An ASIC doing 100 TH/s at 3400 W is overclocked to 115 TH/s at 4100 W. Hashrate went up 15 percent, consumption 20: efficiency slipped from 34 to roughly 35.7 J/TH. On a cheap rate income still grew, on an expensive one the same miner in eco mode would earn more.

How far can an ASIC be overclocked

Usually 10 to 20 percent on hashrate, past that you hit the power supply and the cooling. Every miner is individual, autotuning finds the limit.

Does overclocking kill the chips

It is not frequency that kills, it is temperature and its swings. An overclock on hydro at a steady 60 degrees is safer than stock on dusty air in the heat.

Why did hashrate drop after an overclock

Most likely throttling: the cooling could not keep up, so the firmware cuts frequency. The real number on the pool is more honest than the number in the config.
