Two numbers that almost never agree

Pool hashrate is what the pool has worked out from your shares. It differs from the figure on the asic, and that is normal.

What pool hashrate is

The asic reports its own hashrate directly: how many attempts it makes. The pool does not see your miner; it sees only the shares that arrive and estimates the speed from them. That is an estimate rather than a measurement, so it always comes out a little different.

The estimate has an averaging window. The five minute figure jumps up and down by tens of percent, because shares come in unevenly. The daily one barely moves, and that is the one to watch. Comparing the five minute figure with the spec sheet is a way to ruin your own evening.

A gap of up to a couple of percent between the pool daily figure and the local one is normal: part of the work goes into rejects and stales. If the gap holds and runs wider than that, you look for the cause in order: rejected shares, stales, temperatures, live hashboards.

There is a second sense of the phrase: the total hashrate of the whole pool. Divide it by the network hashrate and you get the pool slice of the network. That decides how often the pool finds blocks, and therefore how smoothly payouts run under PPLNS.

How to read the statistics

Compare the pool daily figure with the local one rather than the five minute one. The five minute figure is only there to show that the asic is online at all.

If the daily figure sits more than a couple of percent below the local one, look at rejects and stales: most often that is where it goes.

Look at the pool slice of the network once, when you pick a pool. A large pool pays more smoothly, while a small one can hand you a long run without blocks, and on PPLNS that shows.

An example in numbers

The asic reports 200 TH/s, the five minute figure at the pool wanders from 150 to 250, and the daily one sits at 197. All fine: 1.5 percent went into rejected and late shares. If the daily figure held at 180, that is already 10 percent, and a gap like that needs picking apart.
