Miner Warranty
A miner warranty is an obligation to repair or replace an asic with a factory defect. Terms and conditions differ between the manufacturer and the seller.
How a miner warranty works
The factory warranty from most miner makers is 180 days, half a year, and that is noticeably shorter than the household term people are used to. The count starts from shipping or from delivery, and different documents from one and the same maker sometimes word this differently, so the date gets pinned down by the delivery note.
Components live a life of their own. A power supply bought separately from an asic carries no warranty at all from some makers, and a defect is accepted only in the first days after delivery. That is an unpleasant detail, and people usually learn it at the moment something breaks.
On top of the factory warranty sits the rights of the buyer. In Spain a purchase made as a consumer falls under a statutory conformity period, and it is longer than half a year. That category covers private individuals as well as organizations buying outside their commercial activity. If the equipment is bought for a business, the protection does not apply, and what remains is the terms of the contract.
What almost always voids the warranty: an opened asic with solder marks, thermal paste and heatsinks changed on your own, work outside the stated temperatures, traces of water and corrosion, and converting an air cooled asic to immersion. Third party firmware by itself is not always grounds for refusal, though arguing with the maker in that situation gets harder.
Quick reference table
| Typical factory term | 180 days |
| When the count starts | shipping or delivery, per the documents |
| A power supply bought alone | no warranty from some brands |
| Consumer rights in Spain | the statutory term runs longer than half a year |
| Common reason for refusal | opening, water, work outside the range |
What to do before and after the purchase
Keep the delivery note and the serial number, and photograph the label on the case. Without a serial there is no warranty conversation to start, and labels rub away over time.
Do not take an asic apart while it is under warranty. Blowing it out from the outside and cleaning filters is maintenance, while pulling heatsinks and changing paste is intervention. If temperatures climbed, bring it to a service center, where this gets done without losing the warranty.
When something breaks, record the symptoms before opening anything: a screenshot of the interface, the per board readings, the log. In our shop we start exactly there, because the log shows whether the power supply died or a hashboard dropped off, and the conversation with the supplier gets specific.
An example from the bench
An asic ran for five months and then stopped starting. The log and the voltage measurements show a dead power supply. The warranty is still running, the delivery note is there and the serial reads fine, so this is a warranty case. Had the owner opened it first and replaced capacitors himself, the same case would have become a paid repair.

Questions and answers
How long is the warranty on an ASIC
With most makers it is 180 days from shipping or delivery. Buyer rights as a consumer in Spain last longer, though they do not apply to a purchase made for a business.
Does custom firmware void the warranty
By itself not always, though proving the cause of a failure gets harder. It is better to put the factory firmware back before going to a service center, if the asic still starts.
Does the warranty cover the power supply
If it was bought together with the asic, usually yes. Bought separately it carries no warranty at all with some brands, and a defect is accepted only in the first days.
What do you need in order to file a claim
The delivery note, the serial number and a description of the symptoms, better with a screenshot of the interface and the log. Opening the asic before filing is not allowed.
Does changing thermal paste count as maintenance
Makers treat it as intervention, because it requires pulling the heatsinks. On an asic under warranty a service center does it.
